PROJECT DANCE
2009

May 22 & 23, 2009

Project Dance is a unique performance opportunity that celebrates our area’s most innovative dancers, musicians and choreographers. Project Dance allows student artists of different disciplines, backgrounds and abilities to collaborate with professional dancers, choreographers and musicians to celebrate life through dance. Students learn that dance is not merely a performing art but is also a means of self-expression.

The purpose of Project Dance is to increase community awareness of the importance of including dance in established school curriculums.

Dancers of all ages and backgrounds are invited to perform. Last year’s cast included over 100 student artists from different middle schools, high schools, colleges and studios. The festival is proud to provide instruction and performance opportunities to the most advance dancer to the first-time performer. We are happy to specialize in instruction for young men and boys who are involved in musical theatre programs but who have not had formal training opportunities. Many high school directors who struggle with the discrepancies between their male and female dancers have found our program to be beneficial to their needs.

Our staff includes a wide spectrum of professional performing artists. On staff are members of Philadanco, former Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders, a former professional ballerina with Germany’s Coburg Ballet, Barrymore Award nominees, former St. Joseph's University Dance Team coaches, Media Theatre's former resident choreographer, in addition to many other reputable instructors and studio owners from all over the Tri-State area. Project Dance cast members are afforded the opportunity to collaborate with reputable artists who possess a wealth of experience.

Project Dance incorporates all types of artists. Local bands who have gained national recognition and are featured on WMMR’s Jaxon Local Shots CD, accompany the dance performances, adding a new element to the students’ previous performance experiences. In addition, outside companies such as Fusion's "Wired,” Jazz Unlimited's Dance Ensemble, Philanova and the Nancy Mulford Dance Company have supported the festival as guest performers. Interested choreographers and guest companies should contact cdaniels@pvihs.org prior to March 16, 2009.

Project Dance allows dancers from local dance studios to share their interests while performing together. Their time preparing for the festival results in long lasting friendship with young men and women that share their similar passion to DANCE!
